Why Shenzhen?

The city, once a fishing town in South China's Guangdong province, is one of China's best-known economic miracles of the past 40 years. Today, its gross domestic product ranks third among Chinese mainland cities, after Beijing and Shanghai. The Chinese government’s goals for culture were specified in a guideline issued in July 2019 promoting the high-quality development of cultural creativity and design in Shenzhen.

Shenzhen enjoys one of the biggest Architecture & Design, Cultural and Creative communities in China. According to the guideline, Shenzhen’s economic activity in these industry sectors will generate at least 100 billion yuan ($14.2 billion) in revenue by 2020, increasing to 300 billion yuan ($45.5 billion) by 2035. The number of institutions and companies in the cultural and creative sector will rise to 15,000 by 2020 with 100,000 employees, says the guideline, while employee numbers will further increase to 150,000 by 2035.
